FAQ
Questions boards usually ask.
Straight answers about the process, working together, and cost. If yours isn't here, send me a note and I'll reply personally.
What does the process look like?
It starts with a free 20-minute conversation, then a written proposal. When you're ready, a contract spells out the scope, schedule, and payments, and the work begins once it's signed and the first payment is received.
How quickly can you start?
Work begins when the contract is signed and the first payment is received.
What happens on the first call?
We talk for 20 minutes about what's happening and what you need. I'll share what I'd look at first. The call is free and confidential, with no obligation.
Getting started
Before we begin.
How will we know it's working?
Each contract names the deliverables and milestones, so you can see progress. [how often you report to the board]
How much can we communicate with you?
The contract sets how we stay in touch, including meetings with your board and staff. [your usual response time]
Will you work on-site or remotely?
That is decided in the contract, based on what your project needs.
How long does an interim engagement last?
Typically 4–6 months. The work varies with each contract and need.
Working together
During the work.
Cost and contracts
What to expect to pay.
What does it cost?
Every engagement is scoped to your organization, and I provide a written proposal first. Many organizations begin with a starter engagement, from $2,000.
How are fees paid?
Full engagements are a fixed project fee, paid at the intervals set in your contract. Starter fees are credited toward a full engagement signed within 60 days.
Do you bill by the hour?
No. Full engagements are priced as a fixed project fee, agreed in writing before work begins.
Fit
Is this right for us?
What size organizations do you work with?
Nonprofits with annual budgets from $600,000 to $5 million.
Is what we tell you confidential?
Yes. What you share in a conversation or an engagement stays confidential, and I don't discuss client information without permission. If I see a possible conflict of interest, I'll tell you before we begin.
What happens when we need a permanent leader?
When a permanent search is needed, I help the board prepare and work alongside trusted partners to support a smooth transition.
